Do you know the standard sizes for garage doors?

What are we talking about? Well, imagine that you’ve decided to build a garage and you’re going to add a new door. Not knowing a lot, you think “I’ll just get a standard size door!”

But—there is no such thing as a “standard” garage door.

Yep, you read that correctly. There are not just one or two “standard” options when it comes to choosing a garage door. Sure, there are some common sizes, but you can’t just assume they’re all the same because you will be sorely disappointed when the garage door dealer tells you there is no “standard size garage door”.

What does “standard” mean to you? Are you picturing a white door that’s about 7 x 8 feet with 3 or 4 windows? Maybe you’re picturing a door that’s 12 x 8 feet, tan or sand-colored, and with no windows. Today, there are just too many styles and colors available for there to be a “norm” or standard.

It’s a complicated industry for those who aren’t familiar. After all, it’d be a lot easier if there were one or two standard sizes, and then a selection of style and color options, and that was it. Unfortunately, there’s a lot more to it than that because people have demanded more over the years.

Because consumer needs and wants are so varied, there are thousands of different styles, colors, and sizes of garage doors out there today. You can pretty much customize whatever you want, which is great for convenience, but can make choosing a bit overwhelming.

Fortunately, we’re here to help. Some sizes do show up more often than others, and we do commonly call those standard sizes. However, as you can see, there are several:

Height: 7 or 8 feet

Width: 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, or 16 feet

These are good to keep in mind when shopping for your new garage door.

Food for thoughts when choosing the best garage door for you

Before you just go out and buy a door, you’ve got to make sure that you know what you need. Are you figuring the size based on your existing garage, or are you building new construction and assuming?

If you’re outfitting an existing garage, you’ll need to know the space available in your garage to install the tracks to lift the door, among other elements. Fortunately, we’ve got tools to help you figure it out. Regarding lifts, there are different types to choose from based on what you need and your available space.

When building a new garage, you’ll first need to determine the use of the garage. That will be a big part of choosing the right size door.

If you’re building a bigger garage but only parking a single car, a single door might be enough, for example.

What kind of vehicles do you want to park in your garage?

The door size is much easier to determine if you know exactly what you’ll be using the garage for. For example, are you going to need space for an ATV or motorcycle? Perhaps you want room for three cars. All of this will impact your choice.

If you only need single-car access, doors will typically range from 7-10 feet in width. 8 is the most common and 9 offers more convenience for parking and door access, but 7 is seen in some smaller garages.

If you have a larger vehicle, you’ll want to go with a 9 or 10-foot door. Fortunately, we’re capable of making doors in any size you want, from 4 feet up to 20 feet (maximum recommended).

Sometimes, the size of the garage door also depends on the size of the garage. For people who like symmetry, having a garage door that fits the garage itself may be more desirable. However, two garages that are identical can absolutely have different door sizes, and two different size garages may also have the same door size.

Single doors typically range from 7-12 feet wide. Double doors are usually 14-20 feet in width.

Generally, the 16-foot door is the best choice for those who want to park two vehicles in the garage. You could choose 14 feet, but that’s going to be a little tight and require some arranging unless you have smaller vehicles.

Are you worried about the kids who aren’t quite experts at garage parking yet? Our doors are available up to 20 feet, giving them plenty of space to learn.

If you’re using the garage for two cars, you’ll need something bigger than a single garage door. But, are you going to install multiple single doors, or one double (or larger) door? Some people don’t even consider this choice.

However, there are pros and cons to be had here. For starters, what if something happens and your garage door won’t open? If you’ve got a single door that’s 16-20 feet wide, you’re stuck. If you choose two doors that are about 8-9 feet, you’ll always have a backup to get out even if something goes wrong.

When it comes to pricing, it’s going to be similar for two single doors versus one double door. The price difference will come in whether you add a garage opener to each. This is where a second door could cost more because of the need for a second opener.

If you’re building a shed, you’ll find smaller garage doors that range from 4-6 feet in width for things like lawn tractors to be parked easily.

What about a LiftMaster garage door opener?

The heavier the door you choose, the harder it will be to lift if the garage door isn’t balanced. That’s where you can call the specialists. They can come to do some maintenance and install an electric garage door opener to make your life much easier.

LiftMaster models come in all different styles, including basic and high-tech. One popular choice is the LiftMaster 87504-267. This is connected to WiFi and able to be monitored from your smartphone anywhere in the world. Plus, doors from LiftMaster are designed to prevent theft, as forced openings will cause the door to push in the opposite direction so that it cannot be opened by thieves or unwanted parties.

Think about your garage door size and style

Most of the doors we make are cut to the nearest inch, guaranteeing that you get the door space that you need and don’t have any gaps in the door. You’ll also enjoy the weatherstripping used to fill the rest of the space, creating a door that’s properly installed and insulated.

What’s more is that since each door is custom made, you’ll never pay extra for the customization of getting the exact size that you want.

Keep in mind that the door design you choose might not fit the size you need. It’s easy to have 2 doors with the same pattern, but the spacing on the patterns and doors won’t match up perfectly. If it doesn’t fit right, it could look off. Make sure that you consider this when choosing your door.

One way that you can do that is to test out your design in our Design Centre! Here, you can try all different sizes and styles of doors on your garage to get the perfect look.

Your garage door style

Your door doesn’t just need to work great—you also want it to look great. Considering that this can take up as much as ⅓ of the front of a home, it’s important to choose a door that you’re proud to show off.
